Tension & Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®)

Unearth your innate healing potential with Tension & Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®), a series of subtle movements designed to aid your body in alleviating entrenched patterns of tension and stress.

About TRE

TRE®, a set of uncomplicated exercises developed to help the body relieve deep-rooted stress, tension, and trauma, is a body-centered (somatic) method which does not necessitate verbally rehashing distressing experiences.

Pioneered by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE harnesses a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating, promoting muscle relaxation and soothing the nervous system in a secure environment. This activation helps the body gravitate towards equilibrium. Designed as a self-help tool, once mastered, TRE can be employed on an as-needed basis throughout one's lifespan, thereby constantly supporting and enhancing personal health and overall wellness. Consistent practice of TRE has the potential to boost resilience and promote optimal autonomic nervous system regulation.

Mechanism of TRE

Trauma can cast a lasting shadow over our physical and mental well-being, triggering physical discomfort, emotional turmoil, and relationship challenges. Nevertheless, there is light at the end of the tunnel. TRE offers a gentle yet effective mechanism to cushion the body and mind from the aftermath of trauma.

The tremor mechanism triggers a relaxation response in the muscles. As tension gets released from the body, the brain senses a decline in pain signals, thereby stimulating the production of healing-promoting hormones. Additionally, TRE boosts parasympathetic nervous system activity, encouraging rest and relaxation both physically and mentally.

Benefits of TRE

TRE is a beneficial tool for anyone grappling with the repercussions of chronic stress or trauma. You may be a candidate if you struggle with chronic muscle discomfort (especially in areas like the neck, shoulders, or lower back), persistent headaches, or digestive distress.

FAQs

How does TRE function?

TRE harnesses an inbuilt tremoring mechanism that assists in the downregulation of the nervous system and body, while also aiding in the reduction of muscle tension. The provider instructs the clients on a sequence of movements to trigger the tremoring mechanism. Over a period of time, TRE can help foster improved self-regulation.

How long is a TRE session?

Initial learning of TRE requires a 1.5-hour session. Independent practice can range from 15-45 minutes, up to thrice weekly. Subsequent appointments with a certified TRE provider last one hour.

Is TRE safe?

TRE is a safe and effective approach for most individuals. However, it's crucial to seek a certified provider proficient in TRE practice. For those with a clinical diagnosis or psychiatric condition, it's important to consult with a medical professional or a certified TRE provider.
